Gene Therapy:
DNA is the chemical material that controls a vast array of genetic information-from the type of metabolic enzymes that will be present in our bodies to the color of our eyes, hair, and skin.  Sometimes the genetic coding goes awry, resulting in such abnormalities as defective, missing or translocated genes.  A translocated gene is a gene that is in the wrong position on the chromosome.

Now under intensive experimentation, the exciting field of gene therapy or gene splicing may one day permit scientists to correct such errors of nature by inducing changes in the master blueprints of the body or the chromosomes.

Growing evidence suggests that in the future gene therapy will permit the treatment of severe and often fatal diseases through alteration of DNA molecules that make up the genes and molecules.  The list of human disorders can be traced to a specific gene or gene region grows on a weekly basis.

A gene that produces a major component of amyloid, an abnormal protein, seems to be involved when symptoms of Alzheimer's disease are present.
