Nervous System...
Nervous System 1:
The nervous system is the major controlling, regulatory, and communicating system in the body. It is the center of all mental activity including thought, memory and learning.
Most of us can probably remember being told, when we were children, not to touch the stove or some other source of potential harm. Since children are curious and tend to learn through the tactile or touching sense, a hot stove may bring about an immediate response of pulling away with a vivid memory of painful fingers to remind us of this response.
This simple and familiar experience illustrates the functions of the nervous system:
Control of the body's billions of cells is accomplished mainly by two systems; the nervous system and the endocrine system.
The endocrine system transmits information more slowly by chemicals secreted by ductless glands into the blood stream and circulated from the glands to other parts of the body. The nervous system transmits information very rapidly by nerve impulses conducted from one body area to another.
Electrochemical impulses of the nervous system make it possible to obtain information about the external and internal environment and do whatever is necessary to maintain homeostasis.
The nervous system has two divisions; the central nervous system (CNS), which consists of the brain and the spinal cord, and the peripheral nervous system (PNS), which consists of cranial nerves and spinal nerves. The PNS includes the autonomic nervous system.
The peripheral nervous system relays information to and from the central nervous system, and the brain is the center of activity that integrates this information. It also initiates responses, and makes us the individuals that we are.
