11. HCFA Administers Medicare

The nation's largest health insurance program, which

covers approximately 39 million Americans

HCFA REORGANIZATION

The Health Care Financing Administration, the federal agency that administers Medicare and Medicaid, has a new name and its structure has been reorganized. The new name for the agency is “Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services” (CMS).

Additionally, the agency has been reorganized into three separate divisions:

Center for Medicare Management – This division is responsible for the administration of the traditional “fee-for-service” Medicare program.

Center for Beneficiary Choices – This division is responsible for the administration on the managed care segment of Medicare.

Center for Medicaid and State Operations – This division is responsible for the administration of the Medicaid and Children's Health Insurance Programs. The federal government shares responsibility for these programs with the states.

Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Tommy G. Thompson, who was an advocate of the name change, has promised that the three centers will strive to reduce bureaucracy and become more helpful to states, health care providers and to patients.
