Safety is paramount concern in drug administration!

Know these!Know the "Five Rights" when administering drugs:

1. Right patient
2. Right time and frequency of administration
3. Right dose
4. Right route of administration
5. Right drug

13 Guidelines For Safety in Drug Administration:

 1. Know the policies of your work place (clinic, hospital, physician's office.)
 2.  Give only those medications for which the physician has written and signed the order.
 3.  Know and use common abbreviations with 100 percent accuracy!
 4. Check with the head nurse or physician when in doubt about any medication.
 5. Identify the patient.
 6.  Double check! Make certain that the date on the medicine card, or order
corresponds exactly with the label on the patient's medicine.
 7.  Always have an other person, e.g. the head nurse, or pharmacist check
calculations.
 8. Read all directions, warnings, and interactions about the drug and double
check with patient and chart what his/her current medications are and if there are any known allergies to medications.
 9. Do not converse during drug administrations, and  concentrate on
your duty! Remember that attentiveness is the most important aspect of safety.
10.  Remain with patient until all medications have been swallowed.
11. Watch patient for signs and symptoms of an allergic reaction.
12. Record (chart) only after medication has been given.
13. Keep the medication cabinet or drug cart locked at all times when not in use
