Collecting and Handling Specimens


 

1. When urine is required for bacterial cultures, the patient is given a sterile container and instructed to collect a

    clean catch urine sample.

2. What safety guideline is important to follow during a routine urinalysis?

Use the same pipette for all patient's urine samples.
Allow urine to sit at room temperature to ferment the urine properties.
Once tested, urine can be disposed of by the janitorial service.
Treat all specimens as if they were infectious.

3. Urine cultures are frequently ordered for patients suspected of having

glucose in their urine.

synovial fluid
throat culture

7. Information not needed on the label attached to the specimen container is the

name of the patient.

initials of the person who took the sample.
